Ray Pace Writes
You could call this my maiden voyage on Substack. I've hung around the dock, noting writers who seem to enjoy the voyage and swapping meaningful tales about the literary world's fair winds and sometimes rough seas.
Boats have long been a part of my writing life. With fellow writer and boat junky Leicester Hemingway, I searched Miami boatyards till I found “Coconuts,” a small sloop easily sailed off tropical beaches. While searching, we also created a magazine featuring sports and leisure.
A few years later, a bit larger sloop, “Solar Wind,” took our crew to the offshore islands of Sanibel, Captiva, and Pine Island, where we created a nature guide.
Three years later, “Creole Belle,” our swing-keel sloop, became our home and newsroom for The Miami News Key West bureau.
In 1990, our sloop “Cayo Hueso,” docked at Pier 39 in San Francisco. “Cayo Hueso” became our home and office, where I wrote a book on cable cars and filed sports stories for Beckett Publishing.
Our last boat, “Avatar,” docked in Honolulu, led me toward writing hard-boiled mystery novels. I’ve written five so far. A sixth is on the way.
We no longer have boats, preferring to live on the slopes of Mauna Kea in Waikoloa Village, a thousand feet above a rising sea. However, we still visit the shorelines and marinas of the Big Island and enjoy hiking its sandy beaches.
I look forward to connecting with interested writers on Substack.
